The Pride Before The Fall
Will Icarus’ tired shoulders
always have to bear the weight
of Daedalus’ failed scheme
It was not Icarus’ crimes for
which they had to flee from Crete
so who should truly face the blame
It was Daedalus who built the wings
that couldn’t stand up to the sea spray
nor withstand the heat of the sun
Daedalus told his son to follow
to watch closely how high, how low he flew
but enough light will blind anyone
He was alone with his eyes full of sunshine,
alone with the wind and the warmth,
and whose heart would not swell
Then I remember Icarus for
the wonder he felt in flight. For the
joy he claimed before he, faultless, fell.
