To a god playing dice with the universe
When charged with construction of a world
one instinct is to maintain sequence of the causal,
but I advise you to avoid being caught in this logic,
even as it governs those under your care. As a creator
you must have a mind to roll with the dice
and find a more flexible sense of the truth.
We are used to a linear meaning of truth
observation having no bearing on the state of the world.
Some number has been rolled before you count the dice
and a fact must be true prior to it becoming causal.
But I assure you that in the role of creator
this is no longer a useful kind of logic.
The goal is not to build without logic
but to avoid dependence on an unspoken truth,
to leave room for narrative structure. A creator
who leaves the maintenance of their world
to the mindless engines of chance and causal
factors, could be replaced with a set of dice.
There’s no reason to rely on the will of the dice
and just hope that the story stumbles into logic,
because you don’t need to start with the causal.
Because what makes its way to the status of truth
does not depend on facts behind your facade of a world.
It comes down to your word as the creator.
It is the privilege of the creator
to leave blank the faces of the dice
until someone else gets to look. In this world
the cat is both dead and alive, defying linear logic.
But believe me they will assume the truth
you someday settle on was always there, always causal.
So wait until someone asks after the causal
chain of events to put your foot down as creator
and collapse the waveform into what was always the truth.
Settle on whatever sounds right for where the dice
have led you in the moment, and the illusion of logic
is preserved to the perspective of anyone inside the world
The creator working at the mercy of dancing dice,
guiding the truth with a gentle hand, gentle logic,
must learn to live outside of the causal world.
